Many families have been using the downtime during COVID-19 to clean out their kids’ closets, declutter the pile of toys stacked up in the living room and tidy up the bookcase. But once it’s all done, where does the stuff go?
One local mother has a way to not only get unwanted items out of your house but also make a few bucks in the process.
Samone Gibson organizes a children’s pop-up consignment sale twice a year called Just Between Friends of Pembroke Pines-Miramar. Like many events this year, her spring sale was canceled because of COVID-19, but the fall sale is back this month at a new venue with plenty of safety protocols in place and an extra weekend.
Families can sell their gently used children’s items and shoppers can take advantage of deals on everything from baby equipment to games from Wednesday, Oct. 21 through Sunday, Oct. 25 and Thursday, Oct. 29 through Saturday, Oct. 31 at the Davie Shopping Center, 5595 S. University Drive, in Davie.
There’s still time left for families who want to consign their items. Information about the process is available at bit.ly/2H6fEt9.
Drop-off times are from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18 and from 1 to 6 p.m Monday, Oct. 19. Mid-sale restock drop-off is from 1 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28.
Samone, tell us about yourself and your family.
I am a wife and mother of two beautiful daughters. We currently make our home in Parkland and have lived in South Florida for the last eight years. My husband Brandon and I enjoy doing public service where we can teach our girls the importance of giving back. Brandon is my business partner and he is an attorney. I also work for a privately-owned automotive company in product development.
How did you get the idea for the consignment sale? How long have you been organizing the event in South Florida?
I first learned about Just Between Friends from a postcard left at my daughter’s preschool at the time. I decide to attend the sale to see for myself what a children’s consignment sale was all about. I was amazed not only at the variety of items offered but the quantity and quality of the items available at such great prices.
After being a customer for about a year, I decided that I wanted to bring this service to more families. We have been organizing sales in South Florida for three years. Just Between Friends is an international franchise system that has been in business since 1997. There are more than 150 territories across the nation. As a franchisee, the company provides the technology support to run the sale and brand standards that we adhere by to make sure that everyone attending our sales has a similar experience.
What are the benefits of shopping for gently used items?
For people who don’t normally shop consignment, I think the biggest reason to shop is the savings. Most items at our sale are 50% to 90% off the retail price. Another big benefit is that all the merchandise at the sale comes from families in the local community. That means the money spent and made helps local families. It is all about the community helping the community and we would love for you to be a part of that.
How do you think COVID-19 and its financial effects are going to affect the sale this year?
I think that COVID-19 has shown us that we are all stronger together as a community. Due to the number of families who have had an interruption in income, I think more people need to know about this sale more than ever. Every parent wants their child to grow up feeling confident in the clothes that they wear. In order to do this, their money needs to stretch further.
I anticipate some families being apprehensive about shopping our sale, but we have put new safety protocols in place such as requiring all shoppers and team members to wear a mask, placing hand sanitizers throughout the sales floor and placing sneeze guards at the cashier check out. We are also encouraging families to bring their own recycled bags. Our loyal sellers know our brand and over 150 people have already registered to sell their items with us.
What are some of the best items or deals you’ve seen people get at your sales?
Over the years, some of the best deals I have seen are with items such as toys, strollers, bikes, books, DVDs, sporting equipment, children’s furniture and name-brand clothing. Thousands of families save 50% to 90% off the original retail price. So often children grow out of clothing and only wore an item once or twice. JBF allows for items to be recycled and enjoyed by another child. The best deals I see by far are on toys.
Who determines the pricing of the items?
The consignors of the item determine the price. Each consignor is assigned a unique number from our tagging system. Each individual item offered for sale is priced using the Just Between Friends software. Each consignor then prints a tag that includes a barcode to affix to the item. We scan the barcode at the register during checkout.
Our sale has free admission, but we do require that a ticket be registered so we can anticipate and plan for the volume of shoppers. Free tickets can be ordered at bit.ly/FS20Free.
If someone wants to shop the presale on Tuesday, Oct. 20 they can purchase a Prime Time pass for $10 at bit.ly/PrimeFS20.
What will the shopping experience be like?
Shopping at a Just Between Friends sale is so much fun. There is such a variety of items to see that I recommend that shoppers make a list of the items they want to find the most. Each area of the sale has signage that helps to direct the shoppers where to look. It is also a good idea to know the child’s size that you are shopping for, including shoe sizes. We recommend that families buy sizes that will fit their children from now up to 6 months from now.

We care about the community we serve. One of the great benefits of owning this business is that many of our generous sellers, known as consignors, donate their unsold items to our local charity, Countyline Worship Center Church of God, 4065 SW 40th Ave., West Park. This means that deserving children in Broward County will receive these gently used items free of cost. It is our hope that these donations provide hope and healing to those families in need.
